NOTICE: Fire service promotes safe use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer

Prince Edward County Fire & Rescue is offering the following advice for ensuring the safe use and placement of hand sanitizing stations using alcohol-based hand rub:

• Avoid exposure to open flames, such as lit matches or lighters used by smokers, during or immediately after application.

• In oxygen-enriched environments, ensure the rub is completely dry before touching equipment, devices, bedding or patients/residents.

• When installing dispensers, locate them away from radiant heaters or other potential sources of ignition. Dispensers should be placed at six inches or 150 mm above or away from the sides of electrical switches and outlets and at least 3 feet or 1 metre away from any open flame.
