NOTICE: Garage and yard sales allowed in Prince Edward County

Garage and yard sales are once again permitted to take place in the County of Prince Edward.

Council on August 4 rescinded the by-law that temporarily prohibited garage and yard sales, a measure that was taken to help limit the spread of COVID-19.

The emergency order issued by the Government of Ontario currently allows public and social gatherings of 50 people maximum indoors (or partially indoors) and 100 people maximum outdoors. People gathering within these limits must distance 2 metres or 6 feet from each other. Anyone hosting or attending an event that would exceed this number of persons at any given time on the property is subject to the penalties set out within the order.

At this time, Hastings Prince Edward Public Health is not recommending large scale, collective street/community sales; however, if individual households choose to host second-hand item exchanges or individual yard/garage sales, here are some key considerations:

• Post signs at the end of the property to inform the public of rules and regulations in place
• Have a plan to reinforce limiting number of people to adhere to the provincial orders. This may include designating a person to monitor the numbers and/or posting signage at the end of your property asking people to wait if there are 50 people (indoors or partially indoors) or 100 people (outdoors) already shopping.
• Position tables as far apart as possible to allow for physical distancing of 2 metres (6 feet)
• If held indoors (e.g. garage or tent) customers and staff must adhere to relevant regulations regarding face coverings.
• Identify a specific traffic flow so that customers are moving in one direction by posting signs or taping arrows on pavement
• Ensure customers are distancing from each other as they walk from table to table
• Have hand sanitizer available for yourself and customers’ use
• For cash exchange ensure that you wash/sanitize your hands before and after touching the money. New bills are made of plastic so can be sanitized as well as any coins
• Designate a cash box space for customers to set their money down and retrieve change from rather than directly exchanging money
• It’s strongly recommended that the host keep customer contact information (e.g. name and phone) to facilitate contact tracing

Masks or face coverings must be worn when in enclosed public spaces and at outdoor markets or farm stands when physical distancing is not possible. Visit the County website to learn more about mask and face covering requirements.

If you need to sell or give away items, you can also hold ‘online garage sales’ through platforms like Kijiji and Facebook MarketPlace and coordinate contactless sales and pick-ups.

Up to date information on the County’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic is posted on the County website.
