Activity Aide Students (Youth Summer Position)

Do you have passion for helping others? Do you enjoy developing and planning activities for elderly individuals? Our Human Resources Department is currently accepting applications from students to fill two (2) vacancies for the summer position of Activity Aide Student at the H.J. McFarland Memorial Home, a long-term care facility located in beautiful Prince Edward County in the bustling municipality of Picton, Ontario. Our philosophy of care is one that recognizes the individuality of each resident, and where all staff, family members and community partners are valued and respected for their contributions to resident care.

The ideal candidate will be enrolled in a post-secondary program in Recreation and Leisure, Therapeutic Recreation, Kinesiology, or a related field and be returning to school in the Fall. This individual will work with the Recreation team to provide meaningful activities to the residents that will meet their social, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and physical interests. As part of the team, this person will help facilitate programs and complete visits with the residents, and he/she/they will work as part of the interdisciplinary team, building both communication and professional skills over a 16-week placement. The candidate will be professional and available for all shifts, including weekends and holidays.

General qualifications include:

  • Enrolment in a recognized post-secondary program and returning to school in the Fall.
  • Knowledge of the requirements for providing recreation and social activities in a long-term care facility.
  • Able to be self-directed and provide creative ideas and opportunities for activities.
  • Able to work as part of a team, and independently, as required.
  • Maintain and support adaptive communication techniques with all members of the team.
  • Have knowledge related to food safety, sanitation and nutrition.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Resident-focused.
  • Knowledge of the Resident Rights as outlined in the LTC Homes Act.
  • Proof of a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening Check.
