Prince Edward County is celebrating Earth Day on Saturday, April 22 with a number of events and activities leading up to and surrounding the occasion.
“Earth Day is a time we can come together and renew our commitment to the responsible use and protection of the natural environment,” Mayor Ferguson says. “An exciting slate of activities are planned for Earth Day this year and it is my hope that people across the County will participate.”
Earth Day began in 1970 to raise awareness of environmental action. Today, countries around the world take part in events that showcase what organizations are doing to address various environmental issues.
Events planned in Prince Edward County include:
- Earth Week Talks: Environmental Renewal, in support of the Alternatives for Women Group
Sunday, April 16, 2 pm Macaulay Church, 23 Church St, Picton - Owen Jones Memorial Clean-Up Day in support of Quinte Trash Bash
Saturday, April 22 throughout the County - Composter Giveaway
Saturday, April 22 from 8:30 am – 12 pm (while supplies last), 75 County Road 1, Picton (next to the dome at the rear of the property) - Mulch Giveaways
Wednesday, April 26 and Saturday, April 29 from 8 am to 4 pm (while supplies last), Milford Waste Disposal Site, 1132 Old Milford Road - Earth Week Talks: The Beauty of Compost / Staff Update on Tree Initiatives
Tuesday, April 25 from 1 pm – 3 pm, Macaulay Church, 23 Church St, Picton - Earth Week Talks: Wetlands, Wildlife and Global Warming/ The Beauty of Compost/ Volunteer Open House
Thursday, April 27 from 4 pm – 7 pm, Highline Hall, Wellington and District Community Centre, 111 Belleville St, Wellington - Tree Seedling Giveaway
Saturday, April 29 from 8 am – 1 pm, various locations in the County (while supplies last) - Large Item Swap
Saturday, April 29 – All Day, County-Wide. This event promotes the beneficial re-use of large household items and divert waste from landfill sites.Residents within settlement areas are encouraged to place their lightly used large items at the curb for other residents to take and continue to use. For those living in rural areas, The County encourages residents to post their items and location in the event page on Facebook for people to peruse. This will help reduce greenhouse gases and improve interest in the program. Those living in the settlement areas are also welcome to post the items they will be offering.
