Increased turtle, snake and frog activity in the County

June 10, 2024

June 10, 2024

Many turtles, snakes, and frogs call Prince Edward County home. These creatures can be found on roadsides, trails, and areas next to wetlands and water courses especially from May to July.

  • During this time, turtles, snakes and frogs are nesting, which means people are more likely to see them on roadways and trails as the creatures move around.
  • Several turtle nests have been spotted on the Millennium Trail in the following areas:
  • Wesley Acres Road and Barker’s Lane – Provincially Significant Coastal Wetland
  • Highway 33 and Wesley Acres Road – Provincially Significant Coastal Wetland
  • Benway Road and Danforth Road (Hubbs Creek) – Provincially Significant Wetland
  • Station Road and Closson Road (Slab Creek) – Provincially Significant Wetland
  • Lakeside Drive and County Road 1 (Consecon Lake) – Provincially Significant Coastal Wetland
  • Highway 33 and Smokes Point Road – Provincially Significant Coastal Wetland

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are reminded to be respectful of these creatures by being conscious of minimizing the impacts to the animals and the animals’ nests. If you spot an injured creature, please report it to Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre at (613) 354-0264.

Please note: The County of Prince Edward provides this information as a service to the general public. While we do our best to provide accurate information, construction projects and associated service disruptions are subject to change based on weather, road, traffic, and other uncontrollable conditions.
