SUMMARY:Large Item Swap
DESCRIPTION:Prince Edward County is supporting beneficial re-use of large items through endorsing a large item swap. During the event\, residents within settlement areas are encouraged to place their lightly used large items at the curb for other residents to take and continue to use. Large items could include furniture\, electronics\, tools\, etc. \nPromoting the driving of rural roads not only impacts the road condition but contributes large amounts of green house gases. As an alternative\, the County has set up a Facebook page where residents in rural areas can post their items and location for people to peruse. Those living in the settlement areas are also welcome to use the site. \nItems must be removed the next day. The event will be weather dependent and will be cancelled in the event of rain.

SUMMARY:Open House: Tree Planting Plan - White Pines Wind Project
DESCRIPTION:The County of Prince Edward will be undertaking a project to replant trees in areas where trees were removed or impacted by the cancelled White Pines Wind Project (WPD). \nThe County’s arborist investigated areas that were disturbed as part of the WPD project including Crowes Road\, Royal Road and Maypul Layn Road to determine their suitability for tree planting. \nAfter considering all factors the recommended approach for Royal Road and Maypu Layn Road is to plant approximately 25 larger caliper trees (45 mm) this fall. A contractor will plant these trees. \nTree species selected for Royal Road and Maypul Layn Road will adhere to diversity requirements set out in the County’s Tree Management and Preservation Policy and be suitable the local conditions. \nResidents are invited to an open house to discuss the locations and tour the proposed plan on Wednesday\, August 30 between 5 pm and 6 pm. Those interested in attending are invited to meet with staff at 1071 Royal Road. Please note that seating will not be provided and attendees are asked to bring their own chairs if required.

SUMMARY:Public Information Centre: Organics Management Facility
DESCRIPTION:The County of Prince Edward will host three public information centres (PICs) to share the initial list of municipal properties being considered for an organics management facility. \nThe meeting schedule is: \n\nTuesday\, March 19\, 5:30-7:30 pm\, North Marysburgh Town Hall (2699 County Road 8\, Waupoos)\nThursday\, March 21\, 5:30-7:30 pm\, Sophiasburgh Town Hall (2771 County Road 5\, Demorestville)\nWednesday\, March 27\, 5:30-7:30 pm\, Prince Edward Community Centre (375 Picton Main Street)\n\nAttendees at the PICs will have the chance to provide comments on the properties and the criteria used to evaluate them. Those comments will be a fundamental part of the evaluation process. \nIn 2022\, Council directed staff to prepare a study for a municipal organics management facility. The municipality is exploring this option in order to decrease reliance on external management sites and reduce the fixed costs associated with disposing of organics. These costs will increase in coming years due to growth and inflation. \nThe study will evaluate options for managing organic waste on a County-operated site. The study will evaluate several properties currently owned by the municipality as potential sites for operating a compost facility. The study will look at the requirements for developing a composting facility\, potential impacts to people and the environment\, possible technology choices\, and cost and make recommendations for a path forward. \nFollowing the PICs\, staff and the consultant for this study will complete the evaluation\, considering the feedback received at the PICs. Another PIC will be held in August to present the results of the review before the study outcomes are presented to Council in September 2024. \nIf you have questions regarding this study\, contact Albert Paschkowiak\, Environmental Services and Sustainability Supervisor\, at 613.476.2148 extension 4004 or email apaschkowiak@pecounty.on.ca.

SUMMARY:Rain Barrel Sale Fundraiser Deadline
DESCRIPTION:The County Sustainability Group is once again running a rain barrel sale fundraiser this spring. \nRain barrels\, composters\, rain tanks\, and accessories are available for purchase with proceeds going towards the group’s two bursaries: PECI Student Environmental Award and the County Ecological Farmer Award. \nA rain barrel is a container used to catch water flowing from a downspout. Rain barrels reduce the amount of storm water runoff by collecting and storing the rainwater for future use. \nThere are several benefits of using a rain barrel such as saving money and water\, protecting the water supply of the municipality\, better gardens (using rain water instead of tap)\, and reducing the risk of basement flooding. \nOnline orders are now being accepted at https://rainbarrel.ca/csgpicton/. Please note: all orders must be pre-paid online and includes delivery to your home. Orders are due by April 15 and deliveries will begin the week of Earth Day\, April 22. \nIf you would like more information\, contact Don Ross at 613.476.8016 or ecodonross@hotmail.com.

SUMMARY:Earth Day Event- Large Item Swap
DESCRIPTION:Prince Edward County is supporting beneficial re-use of large items through endorsing a large item swap. \nDuring the event\, residents within settlement areas are encouraged to place their lightly used large items at the curb for other residents to take and continue to use. Large items could include furniture\, electronics\, tools\, etc. \nPromoting the driving of rural roads not only impacts the road condition but contributes large amounts of greenhouse gases. As an alternative\, the County has set up a Facebook page where residents in rural areas can post their items and location for people to peruse. Those living in the settlement areas are also welcome to use the site. \nItems must be removed the next day. The event will be weather dependent and will be cancelled in the event of rain.

It’s an opportunity to have your item(s)* repaired for free by community volunteers who believe in a shared responsibility of care and maintenance for the items we own and use.\n\nMeet skilled community members who will help you diagnose your repair and take the necessary steps to complete it with you. We are focusing on offering repairs for items in these categories:\n fabrics/clothing electronics household items small appliances small furniture\n\nRepair Cafés happen all over the world – learn more about the initiative here: https://www.repaircafe.org/en/\n\n*In order to best share resources among all visitors to the Repair Cafe\, please be mindful to bring 1-3(ish) items for repair.\n**Although many common repairs are possible to achieve at the Repair Café not all items will be able to be fully fixed as it depends on the skills\, materials\, and time available for each unique repair.\n\nBring your item(s) for repair with all their broken parts/pieces and clean if possible. If you have the materials you believe you need to fix or replace the issue\, but don’t have the skills to do so\, please bring them also. We will have some spare parts and general fixing materials on-hand.\n\nThe Repair Café is free to attend. We encourage those who can to bring a donation to the Food Bank – either in cash or non-perishable food items – in exchange for support at the Repair Café. A donation jar and box will be on-site.\n\nGot too many hammers\, or other spare tools and repair-esk resources and want to share? Bring them to donate to our Tool Swap table.\n\nThe Repair Café will be set up in the basement/flex space at the Picton Public Library. The space is accessible from the side door of the library\, then by taking the stairs or elevator down one level. Someone will greet you downstairs and provide information about registration and all the options for repair support!\n\nAnyone is welcome to drop-in during open hours with an item for repair and/or drop-off surplus tools they would like to donate to the swap table and/or enjoy a complimentary drink and snack and/or just check out what’s happening and possibly lend your repair skills.\n\n\nIf you have a question about the Repair Café or want to help out as a Volunteer\, you can email Becky at feralfolc@gmail.com
