SUMMARY:Public Information Centre: Bloomfield Main Street resurfacing project
DESCRIPTION:The County of Prince Edward will share more details about the Bloomfield Main Street resurfacing project at a public information centre (PIC) on Monday\, February 2. \nThe PIC will take place from 6 pm – 8 pm at the Bloomfield Town Hall (289 Bloomfield Main Street). \nIf there is inclement weather on February 2\, the meeting will be held on Monday\, February 9 from 6 pm – 8 pm at the Bloomfield Town Hall. An update will be sent out by noon on February 2. Sign up to receive news and notices from the municipality. \nThe resurfacing of Bloomfield Main Street from Corey Street to Wellington Street is expected to happen in 2026. The Province of Ontario is covering 90 per cent of the project costs under the Connecting Links program. \nThe road will always remain open with one lane of traffic\, and the work will be done in sections to help minimize disruption. With minor underground storm sewer work involved\, this project is significantly less complex and time-consuming than recent road projects in Picton and Wellington. \nThe municipality has met with representatives from the business community and residents and will continue to involve them in developing strategies to manage the impact of this project. \nFor more information\, contact the County of Prince Edward at 613.476.2148 ext. 1023\, 613.962.9108 ext. 1023\, or info@pecounty.on.ca.

SUMMARY:New Ontario carbon monoxide alarm requirements take effect January 1
DESCRIPTION:Prince Edward County Fire & Rescue is advising residents to prepare for the changes in carbon monoxide alarm requirements coming into effect on January 1\, 2026. \nThe new regulations under the Ontario Fire Code are designed to strengthen public safety and minimize the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. \nAs of Thursday\, January 1\, property owners must ensure:\n \n\nA carbon monoxide alarm is on every storey that does not contain a sleeping area (for example\, a main floor or basement).\nA carbon monoxide alarm is adjacent to every sleeping area in your home\nIn multi-unit residential buildings\, carbon monoxide alarm requirements apply to individual units based on the presence of fuel-burning appliances or attached garages and may also apply to public corridors served by fuel-fired equipment.\n\nHomeowners must make sure their homes are compliant with the new regulations\, while landlords are responsible for rental properties. \nCarbon monoxide is a colourless\, odourless\, tasteless and toxic gas and is often referred to as the silent killer. When inhaled it inhibits the blood’s capacity to transport oxygen throughout the body. It can poison the body quickly in high concentrations\, or slowly over long periods of time. Exposure to carbon monoxide can cause headaches\, dizziness\, nausea\, and in severe cases\, death. \nEven if your home already has a carbon monoxide alarm\, you may need to add more to comply with the new regulations. Failing to have the required carbon monoxide alarms is an offence under the Ontario Fire Code. \nCarbon monoxide can be generated by furnaces\, room heaters\, fireplaces\, hot water heaters\, stoves or grills and any gas-powered vehicle or engine. Automobiles left running in attached garages\, gas barbecues operated inside the house\, or chimneys and vents that are dirty or plugged can create unsafe levels of carbon monoxide. When properly installed\, maintained and vented\, any carbon monoxide produced by these devices will not stay inside the home. \nPrince Edward County Fire & Rescue also encourages residents to test alarms regularly and have all fuel-burning appliances annually inspected by a qualified technician and ensure vents and exhausts are clear of snow\, debris and obstructions. \nIf you have questions about the updated requirements\, please contact Prince Edward County Fire & Rescue at 613.476.2345 or fire@pecounty.on.ca.

SUMMARY:Public Consultation: Marsh and Macaulay Creek Flood Hazard Mapping
DESCRIPTION:Quinte Conservation will be hosting a public consultation on Thursday\, December 11 regarding updated floodplain mapping for areas along Marsh and Macaulay Creek. \nResidents are invited to learn about the study\, speak with Quinte Conservation staff and provide feedback. \n\nThe study aims to manage flood risk and ensure sustainable development practices. The last floodplain mapping for Marsh Creek was developed in 1981 and is being updated to reflect changes in land use and climate data.\nNatural hazard maps are important tools used by municipal governments\, Conservation Authorities\, and planning agencies to guide development\, zoning\, and emergency preparedness.\nThese maps are used when reviewing development applications to assess natural hazards such as flooding\, which can pose risks to both people and property.\nUsing advanced floodplain mapping tools such as topography\, bathymetry\, water resource modeling\, and field surveys\, the study aims to accurately indicate flood-prone areas and provide a clearer understanding of flooding hazards during various storm events. This mapping will help to better inform future development decisions\, land use planning\, and flood mitigation strategies in the region.
