SUMMARY:Public Information Centre: Former Queen Elizabeth School Redevelopment
DESCRIPTION:The County of Prince Edward purchased in 2024 the 1.8-hectare (4.5 acre) Queen Elizabeth School property\, located at 35 Barker Street in Picton\, from Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board. The purchase of the property\, which was declared surplus to the needs of the school board in November of 2018\, supports the municipality’s commitment to developing new purpose built affordable rental housing and community hub. \nIn March 2025\, County Council finalized a public-private partnership with New View Holdings Inc. for the redevelopment of the property. The redevelopment will result in 198 new residential units over two phases with 50 per cent offered as affordable housing and 50 per cent at market rates. There will also be a 22\,500 square foot community hub for use by local service agencies\, a green amenity space\, and a playground. \nThe framework to implement that public-private partnership includes several agreements that address the short and long-term obligations of both parties and facilitate the next steps of this project\, including: \n\nPublic consultation\nDetail design\nPlanning Act approvals\nConstruction and operation\n\nProject Consultation:\nAs part of the redevelopment agreement\, New View Holdings committed to a consultation process that includes a facilitated charette or visioning session with stakeholders from the neighbourhood and various community representatives\, which took place in August 2025. Click here to view the engagement summary report from the charette(External link). \nThe work at the charette will influence the design of the project including elements such as streetscaping\, landscaping\, architectural design\, arrangement and location of amenities such as the playground\, community garden and greenspace\, and more. \nThe proposed designs will be presented at a public information session on Thursday\, November 6 from 6-8 pm at the Rotary Hall inside the Prince Edward Community Centre (375 Picton Main Street).

SUMMARY:Community Action Projects: Proposal Deadline
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a simple idea that could make your community more connected\, welcoming or safe? Whether you’re a student\, senior\, farmer\, artist\, volunteer or just someone who cares – the municipality wants to support you in bringing your ideas to life! \nThe Community Action Projects program is a new initiative that offers small-scale funding to resident-led projects that contribute to the goals of the Community Safety and Well-being (CSWB) Plan. The CSWB plan encourages people\, organizations and local government to team up to make our community more resilient\, safe and supportive. \nThe Community Action Projects program is all about empowering people to take action on what matters in their community. Whether it’s a neighbourhood gathering\, a wellness workshop\, a local awareness campaign\, or a creative project that builds connection and resilience — your ideas and actions matter. \n$500 in funding is available to support creative\, inclusive and community driven projects led by residents and grassroots groups. Proposals must demonstrate community involvement and alignment with one or more CSWB priority areas: \n\nSeniors support\nHousing and homelessness\nDomestic violence / sexual violence / intimate partner violence\nMental health and problematic substance use (including youth mental health)\nPoverty reduction (including food security)\n\nAny resident or informal group of residents in Prince Edward County may submit a project for funding under the pilot program. Formal organizations (non-profits\, charities etc.) may be involved but the proposals must be led by a resident or group of residents. \nSome examples of possible Community Action Projects include: \n\nCommunity conversations or workshops\nAdvocacy and awareness projects\nLocal art or storytelling projects\nWellness or fitness activities\nCommunity potluck\nSafety awareness campaigns\nResource sharing or skill-building events\nInitiatives that reduce isolation or increase access to support\n\nResidents are asked to submit their proposals using this form. Proposals completed on paper should be addressed to the attention of the Community Safety and Well-being Plan and delivered to: \n\nShire Hall (332 Picton Main Street\, Picton\, ON K0K 2T0); or\nThe Edward Building (280 Picton Main Street\, Picton\, ON K0K 2T0)\n\nAlternatively\, residents may choose to scan a completed form or fill it out digitally and email it to cswb@pecounty.on.ca. SUMMARY:Public Information Centre: York Street Project
DESCRIPTION:The County of Prince Edward will share more information about the York Street reconstruction project including the detailed schedule at a Public Information Centre on Thursday\, October 16. \nThe information centre will take place from 5 – 7 pm inside the Rotary Hall at the Prince Edward Community Centre (375 Picton Main Street). \nIf you are unable to attend the meeting in person\, the information will be posted on the County website the next day. \nThe municipality is tackling this project on York Street in Picton to ensure nearly 400 residential and commercial properties continue to have reliable sanitary sewer service. This project is a high priority because of the deteriorating condition of a large trunk sanitary sewer that runs underneath York Street. \nCounty Council awarded the tender in the amount of $855\,941 plus HST for the project on September 23 to Cobourg Development Services Ltd. Council approved the project in the 2024 capital budget. \nIn addition to replacing the existing sanitary sewer\, the project includes replacing the watermain\, installing a new asphalt roadway and sidewalk\, and adding a curb and storm sewer to accommodate the curb. \nReconstruction work on York Street will take place between Picton Main Street and Mary Street this fall and next spring — no work will take place during the winter months. Because of long-standing issues with soil stability in the area and to avoid damaging adjacent buildings\, the design team considered unique ways to replace the pipe without digging a trench. \nTo accommodate the most viable replacement method\, the municipality will have to close the eastbound lane of Picton Main Street for several weeks in the late fall this year. Temporary traffic signals will ensure one lane of traffic always remains open. Signage will direct drivers to an alternate route around the construction using Walton Street\, King Street\, and Paul Street. \nIf you have questions about this project\, please contact Jeff Shortt\, Project Manager\, at 613.476.2148 extension 1007 or email jshortt@pecounty.on.ca.

SUMMARY:Public Open House: Cultural Heritage Master Plan
DESCRIPTION:An in-person public open house for the Cultural Heritage Master Plan (CHMP) will take place on Monday\, October 6. \nThe meeting will be held from 5 – 7 pm at the Rotary Hall inside the Prince Edward Community Centre (375 Picton Main Street). \nAt the meeting\, staff and the project consultant\, WSP\, will present the latest draft of the CHMP. Attendees can learn more about the plan and ask questions to the project team. \nThe County of Prince Edward is developing the plan to manage and protect its built heritage resources and cultural heritage landscapes. \nA built heritage resource is a building\, structure\, monument\, installation\, or any manufactured remnant that contributes to a property’s cultural heritage value or interest. \nA cultural heritage landscape is a defined geographical area that may have been modified by human activity and include features such as structures\, spaces\, archaeological sites\, or natural elements that are valued together for their interrelationship\, meaning\, or association. \nProtecting and enhancing Prince Edward County’s cultural\, heritage and natural assets for the future is a key objective within the municipality’s Strategic Plan 2023-2026. In addition\, the municipality’s Official Plan states that the municipality will identify cultural heritage resources while ensuring their conservation\, restoration\, maintenance\, and enhancement as part of the community’s ongoing evolution. \nCouncil directed staff\, when it adopted the Official Plan in 2021\, to prepare a Cultural Heritage Master Plan to help guide staff and the development community in this area. \nAs the project progresses\, additional in-person meetings will occur. You can receive project updates by subscribing on the Have Your Say page. Additional information is posted on the Have Your Say page. \nIf you have questions\, please contact Scott Pordham\, Policy Coordinator\, Development Services\, at 613.476.2148 extension 2024 or spordham@pecounty.on.ca.
