SUMMARY:Public Information Centre: Consecon Lake Floodplain Mapping
DESCRIPTION:Quinte Conservation is updating the floodplain maps along Consecon Lake to reflect changes in the watershed over the past four decades. \nQuinte Conservation will use current land use and climate data as well as improved technology to update the 1981 mapping. \nQuinte Conservation strives to protect people and property from flooding through its flood forecasting and warning program and Section 28 of the Conservation Authorities Act. Floodplain mapping is an asset for both of these programs\, as well as municipal planning and flood emergency response. \nUpdates to floodplain mapping can result in: \n\nA reduction in effort\, cost and time for development application review in flood prone areas without accurate mapping.\nA reduction in studies a proponent is required to undertake before development.\nIncreased accuracy of regulatory flood lines.\nIncreased accuracy of flood lines for different flood events\, which can be used to identify flood prone properties and municipal infrastructure for notification\, inspection and/or evacuation during a flood.\nModels that can be used for other studies.\nData that can be used to support municipal road and sewer improvement projects\, natural heritage mapping for municipal plans and more.\n\nClick here to view event details. If you would like to share your questions ahead of the event\, please email csinclair@quinteconservation.ca.

SUMMARY:Public Information Centre: Organics Management Facility
DESCRIPTION:The County of Prince Edward will host three public information centres (PICs) to share the initial list of municipal properties being considered for an organics management facility. \nThe meeting schedule is: \n\nTuesday\, March 19\, 5:30-7:30 pm\, North Marysburgh Town Hall (2699 County Road 8\, Waupoos)\nThursday\, March 21\, 5:30-7:30 pm\, Sophiasburgh Town Hall (2771 County Road 5\, Demorestville)\nWednesday\, March 27\, 5:30-7:30 pm\, Prince Edward Community Centre (375 Picton Main Street)\n\nAttendees at the PICs will have the chance to provide comments on the properties and the criteria used to evaluate them. Those comments will be a fundamental part of the evaluation process. \nIn 2022\, Council directed staff to prepare a study for a municipal organics management facility. The municipality is exploring this option in order to decrease reliance on external management sites and reduce the fixed costs associated with disposing of organics. These costs will increase in coming years due to growth and inflation. \nThe study will evaluate options for managing organic waste on a County-operated site. The study will evaluate several properties currently owned by the municipality as potential sites for operating a compost facility. The study will look at the requirements for developing a composting facility\, potential impacts to people and the environment\, possible technology choices\, and cost and make recommendations for a path forward. \nFollowing the PICs\, staff and the consultant for this study will complete the evaluation\, considering the feedback received at the PICs. Another PIC will be held in August to present the results of the review before the study outcomes are presented to Council in September 2024. \nIf you have questions regarding this study\, contact Albert Paschkowiak\, Environmental Services and Sustainability Supervisor\, at 613.476.2148 extension 4004 or email apaschkowiak@pecounty.on.ca.
