SUMMARY:Public Information Centre: Organics Management Feasibility Study
DESCRIPTION:The County of Prince Edward will present the preliminary results of the organics management feasibility study at a public information centre (PIC) on Wednesday\, October 30. \nThe PIC will be held at the Sophiasburgh Town Hall (2771 County Road 5\, Demorestville) between 5:30 pm and 7 pm. \n The preliminary results of the study have identified the rear portion of the Sophiasburgh Works garage property as the preferred location for the potential facility. The study also recommends aerated covered static pile composting for the facility\, a system used to biodegrade the organic material without physical manipulation. Advantages of this system include its efficiency and ability to mitigate odours near the site. \n At the PIC\, staff will provide information on potential site layouts\, the proposed technology\, and the mitigation of potential impacts. Attendees will have a chance to ask questions about the process and provide feedback. \nThe study team will gather the public input before finalizing the report and presenting the outcomes to Council at a future meeting. At that time\, Council would decide whether to move forward with constructing the facility. \nStudy Background \nIn 2022\, Council directed staff to prepare a study to evaluate the feasibility of a municipal organics management facility. The municipality is exploring this option in order to decrease reliance on external management sites and reduce the fixed costs associated with disposing of organics. These costs will increase in coming years due to growth and inflation. \nOver the past several months\, the municipality and its consultant\, GHD\, have evaluated options for managing organic waste on a municipally operated site. The municipality held three PICs in March 2024 to share with the public the municipal properties being considered for an organics management facility. \nIf you have questions regarding this study\, contact Albert Paschkowiak\, Environmental Services and Sustainability Supervisor\, at 613.476.2148 extension 4004 or email apaschkowiak@pecounty.on.ca.

SUMMARY:Public Information Centre: Organics Management Facility
DESCRIPTION:The County of Prince Edward will host three public information centres (PICs) to share the initial list of municipal properties being considered for an organics management facility. \nThe meeting schedule is: \n\nTuesday\, March 19\, 5:30-7:30 pm\, North Marysburgh Town Hall (2699 County Road 8\, Waupoos)\nThursday\, March 21\, 5:30-7:30 pm\, Sophiasburgh Town Hall (2771 County Road 5\, Demorestville)\nWednesday\, March 27\, 5:30-7:30 pm\, Prince Edward Community Centre (375 Picton Main Street)\n\nAttendees at the PICs will have the chance to provide comments on the properties and the criteria used to evaluate them. Those comments will be a fundamental part of the evaluation process. \nIn 2022\, Council directed staff to prepare a study for a municipal organics management facility. The municipality is exploring this option in order to decrease reliance on external management sites and reduce the fixed costs associated with disposing of organics. These costs will increase in coming years due to growth and inflation. \nThe study will evaluate options for managing organic waste on a County-operated site. The study will evaluate several properties currently owned by the municipality as potential sites for operating a compost facility. The study will look at the requirements for developing a composting facility\, potential impacts to people and the environment\, possible technology choices\, and cost and make recommendations for a path forward. \nFollowing the PICs\, staff and the consultant for this study will complete the evaluation\, considering the feedback received at the PICs. Another PIC will be held in August to present the results of the review before the study outcomes are presented to Council in September 2024. \nIf you have questions regarding this study\, contact Albert Paschkowiak\, Environmental Services and Sustainability Supervisor\, at 613.476.2148 extension 4004 or email apaschkowiak@pecounty.on.ca.
