Changes to Ontario Building Code in effect January 1, 2025

December 23, 2024

The Government of Ontario has released a new  Ontario Building Code that will come into effect on January 1, 2025.

According to the provincial government, the purpose of the new code is to reduce regulatory burdens for the construction industry, increase the safety and quality of buildings, and make it easier to build housing.

The public is advised to make note of the following transition periods:

Until December 31, 2024:

January 1, 2025:

  • The 2024 Building Code comes into effect. There will be a three-month grace period until March 31, 2025, for certain designs that are already underway.
  • Permit applications must be submitted using the new 2024 Ontario Building Code.
  • Permit applications may be submitted using the 2012 Ontario Building Code if working drawings were completed by December 31, 2024.

April 1, 2025:

  • Permit applications must be submitted using the 2024 Ontario Building Code.

The new version of the Building Code has been developed from the consultation of various partners in the sector, including building officials, fire prevention officials, architects, engineers and builders within the construction industry, to ensure Ontario’s buildings continue to remain safe.

For more information, visit the County’s website or contact Ryan Arcand, Chief Building Official, at 613.476.2148 extension 2041 or rarcand@pecounty.on.ca.
