Don’t invite unwanted dinner guests on your next waste collection day.
Collection staff remind residents to protect their waste from being disturbed by animals when set out at the curb. When animals have access to curbside waste, it can result in significant messes and waste littering in the location.
Here are some suggestions for securing your waste from trash-seeking animals:
- Use a garbage can with a securable and reinforced lid.
- If possible, place the waste out the morning of your collection day before 7 am. This step will help deter nocturnal nemeses like racoons, skunks, and coyotes. Reminder: you cannot put your waste at the curb before 6 pm on the evening before collection day, as per the County’s waste collection by-law.
- Properly sort waste and segregate all food and compostable items into the green bin.
- Residents using a common collection location should consider establishing a waste containment structure (with approval from the municipality) to house the area’s waste communally.
Please note that waste set to the curb that is disturbed by animals will not be collected. Removal of this uncollected waste is the responsibility of the homeowners or those who placed the material at the curb.
The municipality appreciates residents’ cooperation in helping to protect public health, keep neighborhoods clean, and allow collection crews to work safely and efficiently.
