Mabel Kleinsteuber boat launch closed September 17 for treatment of aquatic invasive species

September 15, 2026

A licensed applicator will be using pesticides to control phragmites — an aquatic invasive species — at the Mabel Kleinsteuber Boat Launch (1260 County Road 12) on Thursday, September 17.

The municipality is working with the West Lake Community Association’s Aquatic Invasive Phragmites Control Project on this work.

During this time, the Mabel Kleinsteuber Boat Launch will be closed to the public.

The pesticides will be used in accordance with all federal and provincial regulations. Pesticide use is allowed under subsection 7.1(2) of the Pesticides Act for the purpose of managing, protecting, establishing, or restoring natural resources.

Controlling invasive phragmites supports the restoration of native ecosystems and helps protect the environmental, recreational, and agricultural resources of Prince Edward County. If left untreated, this aggressive, non-native plant would reduce native biodiversity, degrade wetlands and wildlife habitats, restrict access to shorelines and waterways, impair drainage and water movement and create a dense monoculture that displaces native vegetation.
