April is Dig Safe Month: Click Before You Dig

April is Dig Safe Month, and the County of Prince Edward is reminding residents to “click before you dig.”

Residents must contact Ontario One Call before they dig or break ground on any project. Ontario One Call is a useful tool for requesting a free utility locate. It is against the law to dig without a utility locate.

A locate helps to identify hazardous gas and utility lines buried below the surface of your lawn. Never assume that it is safe to dig, especially in your front yard where utilities are often located. Request a locate for all projects including digging for a fence, patio, tree planting or even aerating your lawn.

Locates are free and easy to book through Ontario One Call. Request a locate online at https://ontarioonecall.ca/. Requests must be received at least five business days prior to digging. For emergency locates, call the Ontario One Call 24/7 contact centre (1.800.400.2255.).

After the request has been made, the utility company will mark the location of underground lines using paint or flags. Dig with caution and follow the instructions provided with your locate request.

Failure to obtain a locate can result in fines, liability for damages, and safety risks such as gas leaks, power outages, or water line breaks.
