Boat cleaning station returns to help fight spread of invasive species

May 28, 2025

A boat cleaning station will once again be located at several municipal boat launches throughout the summer to help stop the spread of invasive species.

All watercraft, including boats, canoes, and kayaks, are regulated as potential carriers of invasive species. These species can cause significant harm to local ecosystems by outcompeting native species and disrupting recreational activities such as boating, fishing, and swimming.

A boat cleaning station can aid in the prevention of spreading aquatic invasive species by providing the necessary equipment to clean, drain, and dry boats. It will also help reduce the transfer of harmful species from one body of water to another.

In partnership with Quinte Conservation and the Invasive Species Centre, a CD3 Wayside Solar Trailer (a waterless watercraft-cleaning system) will be available for boaters during the following times:

May 28 to June 4 – Picton (1 Head Street)

July 9 to July 16 – West Lake (Beach Street)

July 16 to July 23 – Wellers Bay (158 Edward Drive)

August 20 to August 27 – Mabel Klienstuber (1260 County Road 12)

August 27 to September 3 – Glendon Green (1954 County Road 18)

September 10 to September 17 – H.J Macfarland (12106 Loyalist Parkway)

September 17 to September 24 – North Port (End of Solmes Street)

September 24 to October 1 – Big Island (243 North Big Island Road)

Boaters are encouraged to use the boat cleaning station when moving between water bodies.
