Due to the recent heavy snowfall, Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue (PECFR) reminds residents of the importance of fire safety and ensuring clear access to homes and property in the event of an emergency. Please keep in mind the following:
- Property owners are responsible for removing snow from their private property, including driveways, walkways, and access points. This includes roads on private lands, such as condo properties and parks, which must be maintained by property owners unless other arrangements have been made.
- If you live on an unassumed street, the developer is responsible for clearing snow from these areas.
- Directly reach out to the property owner for assistance if there are concerns with access to private lands.
- The municipality’s Private Roads By-law 3121-2012 provides details requiring access to private roads and property. The property owner is responsible for ensuring that access to your home and any exits are clear. This is not only important for daily convenience but also for safety in case of an emergency.
- For concerns regarding snow removal on private property or unassumed streets, please contact the property owner or business responsible for maintenance.
- Ensure all heating vents are not blocked and are clear from snow to avoid carbon monoxide build-up in your home.
In addition to snow removal, PECFR reminds everyone of the importance of home escape planning. Ensure that everyone in your home knows how to safely exit in case of a fire and where to gather so first responders can meet you.
“All residents are encouraged to ensure they have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in their homes and practice home escape planning. Planning must include ensuring everyone can leave the home and meet at a point where first responders can meet with them to assess the situation,” says Fire Chief Chad Brown.
