Trenton – Jim Young’s legacy of training the next generation of firefighters will live on through the donation of a fire pumper truck to the Hastings Prince Edward Regional Training Centre.
Municipal leaders, fire service representatives, and family members remembered and honoured the former firefighter during a ceremony on May 7 where the truck was formally presented to the Hastings and Prince Edward Mutual Fire Aid Training Complex.
“Donating this critical piece of equipment in Jim’s memory is one small thing we can do to honour a man who gave so much to our community and the Quinte region,” Mayor Steve Ferguson says. “Jim’s impact continues to this day with many of our current firefighters using the skills they developed thanks to Jim’s outstanding training.”
Throughout his distinguished career with Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue, Jim Young exemplified dedication, leadership, and a deep commitment to public safety. Beginning as a volunteer firefighter, Jim went on to serve as a career firefighter, Captain, and Chief Training Officer, shaping the professionalism and readiness of those who served alongside him. In 2023, Jim’s leadership and expertise were recognized with his appointment as Deputy Fire Chief for the City of Belleville.
Beyond his local service, Jim’s influence extended across the Quinte region and beyond. As an instructor with the Ontario Fire College since 2005, he devoted himself to training the next generation of firefighters, delivering skills‑based instruction at the Regional Training Centre to countless firefighters throughout the region.
Prince Edward County Council approved the donation of the surplus 2000 GMC pumper truck at its December 9, 2025 meeting. This donation to the Hastings and Prince Edward Mutual Fire Aid Training Complex will strengthen firefighter training opportunities, support compliance with provincial certification requirements, reduce long-term municipal training costs, and contribute to the safety of Prince Edward County residents.
