Know the rules before working on roadsides, ditches and driveways

April 20, 2026

To help keep our roadsides and shared spaces safe and well maintained, the County of Prince Edward is reminding residents and contractors that the use of municipal rights‑of‑way, such as roadsides, ditches, and driveways, is regulated under By‑Law No. 116‑2025.

This by-law governs more than just construction. Approval is required before you:

  • Work in the roadside or ditch
  • Place materials (soil, gravel, commercial garbage bins, equipment) near the road
  • Install or modify a driveway (entrance)
  • Use or occupy the road or roadside
  • Alter drainage, culverts, or water flow
  • Install structures, landscaping, or features within the right-of-way

Improper use of the municipal right-of-way can create safety risks, cause drainage issues, and damage infrastructure. While the by-law does not restrict normal farm practices or routine entrance maintenance, the rules aim to ensure that work in municipal right-of-way is completed safely and with proper approval.

Not complying with the by-law may result in:

  • Orders to remove or correct work
  • Recovery of costs (including adding costs to property taxes)
  • Administrative penalties or fines

The municipality may also take immediate action where a risk to the public exists.

If your project touches the road, ditch, or driveway — check first, then build.
