The County of Prince Edward in inviting written expressions of interest (EOI) from private sector or not-for-profit entities interested in partnering with the municipality to implement County Council’s vision for the redevelopment of the former Queen Elizabeth School property.
The municipality purchased the 1.8-hectare property, located at 35 Barker Street in Picton, from the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board. HPEDSB declared the school surplus to its needs in 2018.
The municipality intended to use an upper-level government grant to purchase the property and undertake improvements to make the existing school building ready. However, the project did not receive the grant, which has necessitated an external investment to move the vision to reality.
The objectives of this redevelopment project are to:
- Provide as many affordable housing units as possible, with affordability as defined in the County’s Municipal Housing Project Facilities By-Law
- Provide up to 37,000 square feet of rental space for identified community service agencies at reasonable rates and with extended lease agreements
- Allow the municipality to recoup its investment in the property (approximately $1.5 million) within calendar year 2024
- Be positioned to move forward with the redevelopment as quickly as possible
The municipality is asking prospective private sector or not-for-profit partners to submit a written Expression of Interest (EOI) clearly indicating how they could achieve the above objectives. The deadline to submit an EOI is Friday, July 19 at 4:30 pm. Click here to view the EOI document.
County Council will consider the EOIs at a special Committee of the Whole meeting on Wednesday, August 7.
