Steady progress on Wellington Main Street construction

March 25, 2025

The accelerated work schedule for construction on Wellington Main Street has allowed the municipality and its contractors to make steady progress over the past two weeks.

  • Installation of the new trunk sanitary sewer on Wellington Main Street between the entrance to the water and wastewater treatment plants to Cleminson Street is now complete. The sanitary trunk will accommodate the needs of future development.
  • Crews have begun installing the new trunk watermain along Wellington Main Street. They started at the entrance to the water and wastewater plants and are moving east toward Cleminson Street. The trunk watermain is required to connect new development areas as well as to address fire flow and water pressure issues in the community.
  • Once the new trunk watermain is installed and the road surface and storm system are reinstated along Wellington Main Street, the road will be reopened to all vehicle traffic. The reopening is anticipated for the first part of June, weather dependent.
  • After work on Wellington Main Street is complete, crews will continue installing the new trunk sanitary sewer and trunk watermain north on Cleminson Street and east along the Millennium Trail. One lane of Cleminson Street will remain open at all times during the construction work.

Detour update

Roads crews will be doing extra maintenance work on Greer Road and Hubbs Creek Road this week. Both roads are experiencing high traffic volumes as drivers navigate around the road closure on Wellington Main Street.

  • As temperatures continue to fluctuate, the freeze-thaw cycle is taking a toll on many of the municipality’s roadways, including Greer Road which is part of the main detour route.
  • To limit further wear and tear on the main detour roads, the municipality encourages drivers to use Danforth Road and Consecon Street or County Road 1 and County Road 2/Belleville Street. Learn more.
  • A full closure on Wellington Main Street cannot be avoided because the existing sanitary sewer and watermains are located within the road. The design team looked at all options to keep one lane open during construction. A full road closure is necessary due to the required depth needed to install the new gravity sanitary trunk main and new trunk watermain. A bypass lane was not possible because of the location of existing surface and underground infrastructure including hydro and gas lines.
