Different population growth scenarios and their implications for infrastructure planning will be the focus of discussion at the Committee of the Whole meeting on Thursday, January 29.
The municipality uses population growth projections to develop plans for maintaining and upgrading key infrastructure such as water and wastewater equipment.
Policy changes, such as reduced federal immigration targets, and evolving economic conditions, including pressures and uncertainty caused by U.S. trade tariffs, prompted the municipality to reexamine population growth projections.
The staff report on the meeting agenda outlines two population growth scenarios for Council’s consideration:
- Continuation of the previously assumed 2.4 per cent population growth rate
- A revised 1.0 per cent County-wide population growth rate identified in the draft 2025 Growth Analysis Study prepared by Watson & Associates
Each scenario has different implications for timing of infrastructure upgrades, paying for the infrastructure, and complying with previous studies and designs.
If Council chooses to explore a revised population growth rate, staff will investigate all implications and return to Council with that information as soon as possible.
