County Council agreed on May 11 to declare surplus a parcel of land on Bowery Street and part of Delhi Park and sell it to Habitat for Humanity for an affordable housing project.
The development would allow a number of County families to access home ownership who otherwise could not afford to do so given current housing market conditions.
Funds from the sale of the property would cover the cost of the environmental assessment the municipality undertook to confirm that the land is suitable for a housing development.
Habitat for Humanity supports the County’s vision that affordable housing and affordable home ownership plays a critical role in strong and stable communities. Municipal staff have been working in partnership with the organization to explore possible sites for a project to address the lack of affordable home ownership in the community.
The County and Habitat for Humanity will finalize the sale and a Memorandum of Understanding in the coming weeks. Further details about the project will be shared with the community once that is complete.
