A winter storm watch for the area has been issued by Environment Canada.
- A major winter storm is expected to occur Friday into Saturday.
- Flash freeze producing icy and slippery surfaces is possible. Damaging wind gusts of 100 to 120 km/h and blizzard-like conditions are expected. Environment Canada is forecasting snowfall amounts of 5 to 15 cm by early Saturday morning. Higher snowfall amounts are possible near Lake Ontario as a result of lake effect snow.
- Crews will be out salting roads this morning. Major roads will be treated first.
- Environment Canada is urging everyone to avoid travel if possible. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery.
- Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight. For information on emergency plans and kits go to www.getprepared.gc.ca.
