Contractors retained by the County of Prince Edward will be undertaking a single surface treatment application on various roads beginning Friday, July 11th.
This work is part of the 2025 rural road preventative maintenance program.
The following roads will be affected and are scheduled to be completed this year:
- County Road 24 (Lighthall Road to Army Reserve Road)
- Massassauga Road (County Road 28 to end)
- Mitchells Crossroad (County Road 17 to County Road 13)
- Old Cheese Factory Road (entire length)
- Walmsley Road (County Road 24 to Bond Road)
Minor traffic disruptions are expected to occur and single lane closures will happen during application. The operation is mobile within the lane closure, and little disruption to property access within the work zone is expected.
Single surface treatment is a preventative maintenance tool that preserves and reinforces existing surface treated roads to extend their life expectancy. It is constructed by spraying a uniform application of asphalt emulsion (liquid) followed by a layer of cover aggregate (stone). This will be followed by an application of fog seal, which is another layer of hot emulsion that is sprayed to hold the new surface together to reduce stone loss and reduce dust. Warm weather and traffic will assist with setting the cover aggregate into the asphalt emulsion.
The 2025 rural road maintenance and rehabilitation plan focuses on preventative maintenance techniques, such as single surface treatment and micro surfacing as determined by the asset management plan for the roads.
