Stay flood safe this spring

March 5, 2025

With significant rainfall expected over the coming days, there is an increased risk of spring flooding and water runoff throughout the region.

Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue (PECFR) reminds residents to stay informed, prepared, and vigilant in the event of sudden flooding.

Key Safety Tips:

  • Avoid flood-prone areas: Avoid areas known to be vulnerable to flooding, such as riverbanks, low-lying roads, and underpasses.
  • Do not drive through flooded streets: Even shallow water can cause vehicles to become stranded or swept away. Turn around; don’t drown.
  • Ensure proper drainage: Check gutters, drains, and stormwater systems around your home or business to prevent water from pooling.
  • Move valuables to higher ground: If you live in an area prone to flooding, move important items and valuables to higher floors or secure locations.
  • Prepare an emergency kit: Ensure you have essentials like water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, and batteries readily available.

Emergency preparedness is key. Ensure that your family or business is ready for a variety of situations. Review your emergency plans, communicate with family members, and stay connected to local authorities.
