The third annual Monarch Point Clean Up will take place on Saturday, September 9 beginning at 9 am.
Residents of all ages are encouraged to participate in the event, happening at the former Point Petre Provincial Wildlife Area and Ostrander Point Crown Land Blocks, to pick up trash.
Participants are asked to pick up garbage bags at one of two depots:
- Corner of County Road 24 (Point Petre Road) and Army Reserve Road
- Corner of Helmer Road and Babylon Road. The County will have a large bin at this location to receive the trash.
Washroom facilities are available at Babylon and Helmer Roads and at Army Reserve Road and County Road 24.
The South Marysburgh Recreation Committee has joined the South Shore Joint Initiative (SSJI) as sponsors of the event with the municipality providing support.
Recently, the Government of Ontario announced that these two public areas have been designated as the Monarch Point Conservation Reserve. The 3,971-acre (1,607 ha) area is now regulated as a conservation reserve under the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act, 2006. Conservation reserve status gives the lands protection from development, while allowing for traditional recreational uses to continue.
Clean ups in this area over the past two years have demonstrated the need for this annual event. In 2022 more than 900 pounds of trash was deposited in the large bin. For more information, and to RSVP for the Clean Up, visit the SSJI website.
