New View Holdings, the private partner in the redevelopment of the former Queen Elizabeth School site in Picton, is hosting a public information centre (PIC) on Thursday, November 6.
The PIC will take place at the Rotary Hall inside the Prince Edward Community Centre (375 Picton Main Street) from 6 pm – 8 pm.
The proposed design will be on display at the PIC. Attendees can browse the information and speak with the presenters and technical specialists. A formal presentation of the design followed by a Q&A will begin at 6:15 pm. After the presentation, there will be an opportunity for attendees to break into smaller groups for focused discussions on planning and design aspects of the project.
Feedback gathered at the PIC will be used to inform the proposed design that proceeds through the municipality’s planning processes.
The material will also be posted on the municipality’s engagement platform, Have Your Say, for review and comment. Click here to view the site plan option.
New View Holdings committed to broad community consultation when it signed the redevelopment agreement with the municipality. A facilitated charette or visioning session with stakeholders from the neighbourhood and various community representatives took place on August 25. The input from that session helped inform the proposed design of the project that will be presented at the PIC on November 6. Background on redevelopment project
Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board (HPEDSB) declared the school surplus to its needs in 2018. After a federal grant was denied in 2023 to re-develop the site for affordable housing and a community hub, the municipality decided to purchase the 1.8-hectare property, located at 35 Barker Street in Picton, from the school board.
The objectives of the redevelopment project are to come closest to the original community vision for the site including:
- Providing as many affordable housing units as possible, with affordability as defined in the County’s Municipal Housing Project Facilities By-Law
- Creating a community hub, similar to the original vision, for local organizations
- Allowing the municipality to recoup its investment in the property (approximately $1.5 million)
- Being positioned to move forward with the redevelopment as quickly as possible
