Spring is here, and with home projects getting underway, the municipality is reminding residents to review the permit requirements before beginning.
Always check if you need a permit for work that impacts a road or the municipal right-of-way (that’s the roadside, ditch, and the space between the road and your property line).
Why is a permit required?
- Permits help ensure that work within the municipal road allowance is completed safely, properly, and without damage to public infrastructure.
- They also allow the County to coordinate work, minimize disruptions, and protect the safety of all road users.
Types of permits
- Required when working on municipal property including boring, road cuts, paving, ditching, and grading.
Service Connection Right-of-Way Permit:
- Required when utility companies are installing or modifying infrastructure within a specific location of the municipal right of way.
- Required for the placement of dumpsters, moving trucks, window cleaning or any activity that involves the use of municipal property.
- A Road Occupancy Permit is required for temporary use or occupation of municipal property, even if no digging or construction is involved.
- Required to install or modify a driveway.
Hiring a contractor? Residents must make sure permits are in place before work begins. “I thought they handled that” doesn’t count after the fact.
Compliance and enforcement
These requirements are established under the County’s By-Law No. 116-2025 a By-Law to Regulate Access to and Use of Municipal Rights of Way in The County of Prince Edward and are enforced to protect public safety and infrastructure.
If your project touches the road, ditch, or driveway — check first, then build.
