Emergency Preparedness Week 2026 — Be prepared. Know your risks

As part of Emergency Preparedness Week, the County of Prince Edward is encouraging everyone to take concrete action to be better prepared for emergencies of all kinds.

“Everyone has a part to play in preparing for an emergency. Experience has shown that individual preparedness and having a plan to support your family and neighbours both during and after a major disaster can make a big difference,” says Patrick Howe, the County’s Fire Chief and Community Emergency Management Coordinator. “Some of the best things you can do are assemble a 72-hour emergency kit to ensure you are well equipped in the case of an emergency, and to have a plan on what to do in case of an emergency.”

The safety and resilience of Prince Edward County depend on the readiness of individuals, families, businesses, and community organizations to respond effectively to unexpected events.

By taking a few simple steps, you can become better prepared to face a range of emergencies – anytime, anywhere. It is important to:

  • Know the risks – Although the consequences of disasters can be similar, knowing the risks specific to the County and the region can help you better prepare. Some specific risks faced by County include severe weather throughout the year, power outages, and flooding.
  • Make a plan – It will help you and your family know what to do.
  • Get an emergency kit – During an emergency, we will all need some basic supplies. We may need to get by without power or tap water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency

Create or review your emergency plans and 72-hour emergency kits. Visit Emergency Management Ontario for more information.

The County’s first responders, emergency management staff, volunteers, and community partners work tirelessly to safeguard our community and strengthen our collective capacity to respond to and recover from emergencies.
