Single surface treatment is a preventative maintenance tool that preserves and reinforces existing surface treated roads to extend their life expectancy. It is constructed by spraying a uniform application of asphalt emulsion (liquid) followed by a layer of cover aggregate (stone). This will be followed by an application of fog seal, which is another layer of hot emulsion that is sprayed to hold the new surface together to reduce stone loss and reduced dust. Warm weather and traffic will assist with setting the cover aggregate into the asphalt emulsion.
The 2024 rural road maintenance and rehabilitation plan focuses on preventative maintenance techniques, such as single surface treatment and microsurfacing as determined by the asset management plan for the roads network. Funding for rural roads is allocated between preventative maintenance techniques and rehabilitation techniques, which continue to fluctuate in funding levels over the five-year plan. Visit the municipal website to learn more about single surface treatment and the road rehabilitation and preventative maintenance program.
