Ameliasburgh Communications Tower
The County of Prince Edward intends to install a new public safety radio communications tower at 13 Coleman Street in Ameliasburgh.
The proposed tower is part of efforts by Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue to improve emergency communications across the municipality.
Project Overview
The proposed communications tower, which is not a cell phone tower, will strengthen radio reliability for emergency responders and improve communications during:
- Structure fires
- Wildland fires
- Motor vehicle collisions
- Medical first response
- Technical rescues
- Mutual aid responses
- Firefighter training exercises
Project details
Project review and approvals
Consultation with Nav Canada and Transport Canada has been completed.
- Nav Canada has determined that the proposed tower will not interfere with local aeronautical traffic. Nav Canada reported no objection to the project.
- Transport Canada has determined that the proposed tower does not require obstacle avoidance markings or lighting and has no objection to the project. As a result, the tower will not be equipped with painted markings or lighting such as red beacons or strobe lights.
Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISEDC) is responsible for approving of this antenna system. Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue is required to review this proposal with the public and local municipality.
After reviewing this proposal, Prince Edward County will provide its position to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada and Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue. ISEDC can be contacted at:

Infrastructure
- 40-metre self-supporting tower and tower base
- Radio antennas
- Underground cabling between tower and demarcation point
- Lightning protection system
- Anti-climb protection
Location
The municipality identified the proposed site because it:
- Is municipally owned
- Will improve radio system operation in the areas of Consecon, Carrying Place, Ameliasburgh and Rossmore to satisfy technical requirements
- Provides safe access for servicing
- Has existing municipal services nearby
Existing towers located on the property of 13 Coleman Street, 6 County Road 19 and 691 County Road 19 were considered for co-location of new radio communications equipment. The existing tower locations do not satisfy the technical requirements of the public safety radio communications network.
Public health and safety
All radio equipment installed on the tower will comply with Health Canada’s Safety Code 6, a document that sets out recommended safety limits for human exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) in the frequency range from 3 kHz to 300 GHz. Compliance with Safety Code 6 is mandatory under ISED regulations before the system can become operational.
The tower will be designed by professional engineers licensed in Ontario and constructed in accordance with:
- Canadian Standards Association requirements
- Applicable structural engineering standards
- ISED requirements
- Transport Canada and NAV CANADA requirements
Project Status
The public has until end of day on Friday, September 18 to provide comments or request to be informed of the County’s position on the proposed tower installation.
