Heritage Village

‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌Ameliasburgh Heritage Village has grown from one building in 1968, to a complex of museum buildings and displays. The main structure was built in 1868 as a Wesleyan Methodist Church. It became a United Church in 1925 and served the community until 1967. Over the years, several additional buildings have been added to the site. A log cabin, display barns, an operational blacksmith shop, a carpenter’s shop, a sugar house, dairy and beekeeping buildings, a general store and a large stone building housing the Goldie Corliss 18 foot flywheel. 

The village is also home to the de Vries Natural Heritage Collection – a collection of nearly 500 specimens of taxidermy, ranging from waterfowl to song birds to mammals, large and small, and fish. It has been deemed one of the finest private collections of taxidermy in the province.

While in Ameliasburgh, be sure to check out the Ameliasburgh Heritage Trail, which highlights sixteen unique locations in the village. The trail includes a number of stops within the museum grounds, but also along Coleman Street and County Road 19. The trail is sponsored by the Ameliasburgh Heritage Hub, a group of local heritage-focused organizations. You can find out more about them here.  

School Visits 

With a full pioneer village to explore, Ameliasburgh Heritage Village is the perfect spot for schools and educational groups to experience a hands-on, interactive field trip! With a Log Cabin, a Blacksmith Shop, a Flywheel, a One Room School House and the deVries Natural Heritage Collection there are several entry points for curriculum connections for all ages! The village has ample indoor and outdoor space for lunch and moving around.

During a school visit, students may learn about: 

• Life in the Log Cabin
• A Day in the life of a Blacksmith
• The One Room School House: Then and Now
• Human-nature relationships and animals through the deVries Natural Heritage Collection

Cost: $5 +HST per student. An additional $1+HST per student for a visit to the One Room School House, which is owned and operated by QEMA.

School visits can be booked Wednesday, Thursday and Friday between 9am-4pm. Please note that the Church building is the only building with heat and air conditioning, as a result, our suggested months for booking are September-November and April-June.
